5 Common Cosmetic Procedures

With around 17.5 million procedures performed each year in the United States, cosmetic plastic surgery has been increasing in popularity and is used to enhance the appearance of a variety of body parts and facial features. Cosmetic procedures can help reduce the appearance of scars and disfigurement due to accidents, as well as help with breathing difficulties. Here are five common cosmetic plastic surgeries.

1. Facelift

A face lift repairs loose, sagging, or wrinkled skin on the face and neck by surgically lifting and tightening the skin and underlying facial muscles. This procedure improves signs of aging such as the fold lines between the nose and mouth, crow’s feet around the eyes, and jowls on the cheeks and jaw. In addition to natural aging, these issues can be caused by genes, stress, sun damage, and smoking. Ideal candidates for this procedure are women and men between the ages of 40 and 60, although younger and older patients are common and have success with face lifts. Bruising and swelling are expected following a face lift procedure, but noticeable improvements will appear as these side effects diminish.

2. Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that removes fat deposits from certain areas of the body, improving its shape in the process. Common places to have liposuction performed are the stomach, arms, thighs, hips, and buttocks. Patients with firm, elastic skin who are within 30% of a healthy weight are ideal candidates for this surgery and will enjoy the best results. Liposuction is best for removing localized fat deposits and should not be done to reduce weight overall. After receiving liposuction, a patient may go home the same day or the next day, depending on how much fat was removed.

3. Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is performed to enhance the shape of the stomach. While diet and exercise are recommended first to achieve a more toned stomach, a tummy tuck can be a good option when achieving a toned midsection is more difficult due to aging, prior surgery, pregnancy, or significant fluctuations in weight. A tummy tuck will not eliminate stretch marks but may reduce their appearance as a side effect of removing excess skin from the abdominal area. After the procedure, expect swelling and a reduced ability to stand up straight for a week or two before being able to see results.

4. Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a procedure that repairs or reshapes the nose and can be done for cosmetic or medical reasons. Cosmetic reasons include narrowing the bridge, changing the angle or shape, and increasing or reducing the size of the nose, while medical reasons include alleviating breathing difficulties and correcting issues due to an injury. A common way to address difficulty breathing is to correct a deviated septum by better aligning the nasal structure within the nose. After surgery, it can take up to a year to notice the full new contour of your nose.

5. Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion

The process of dermabrasion involves sanding down the top layer of the skin so that new, smoother skin can grow back. Common complaints that see improvement with dermabrasion include acne scars, crow’s feet, sun-damaged skin, and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is a similar but less invasive form of dermabrasion and produces many of the same results, such as improvement with hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, and acne scars. A thickening of collagen, a protein in the skin, is responsible for many of the benefits seen from microdermabrasion.

People pursue cosmetic surgery for a variety of reasons, including self-confidence and medical issues. These five procedures are some of the more common among many types of cosmetic plastic surgery.
